Disappearance and Death of David Glenn Lewis

David Glenn Lewis was a lawyer in Amarillo, TX left at home along for Superbowl weekend in 1993. When his wife and young daughter came home on January 31st after a weekend away he was no where to be found. Over 10 years later his DNA would be matched to a John Doe hit and run victum in Yakima, WA that was hit just the day after he disappeared.

David Glenn Lewis was born in 1953 in Borger, TX. He graduated high school in 1972 and went on to earn a bachelor's in political science at texas state university. After which he got his law degree from Texas Tech University Law School in 1979.

At the time of his disappearance, he was an attorney in Amarillo, TX, a member of the American Bar Association, a Sunday school teacher, a night instructor at Amarillo College, a member of the education advisory council, and the district chairman of boy scouts. He was said to be an all-around great guy at home and in the community.

In 1981 he married his wife Karen and they had a daughter a few years later named Lauren who would be 9 at the time of his disappearance.

Disappearance

It was Superbowl weekend in January of 1993 and it was David's favorite team, the Cowboys, against the Buffalo Bills at the Rosebowl arena in California. Lauren and Karen left for a shopping weekend in Dallas, TX (400 miles away) on January 28th. David didn't go because he wanted to watch the game and record it, which according to some sources someone had to be home to press record when the game started.

This same day David had been working at his law firm and told co-workers he felt sick so he went home early. He did still manage to teach a class at Amarillo college that night that ended around 10 pm. From there it is assumed he just went home and went to sleep.

On January 29th a friend from church stated he saw David rushing through the Southwest terminal at Amarillo Airport with no luggage in hand and thought it was odd. There were no other sightings of David this day but later on police would confirm they say a red Ford Explorer (the car that David drove) outside of Potter County Court building around 10:30 pm.

On January 30th there was a sighting of David although it is not stated who saw him or where, and this turned out to be the last time he was seen alive in Amarillo, TX. This same day $5,000 was deposited into his and his wife's joint account. Neighbors also confirmed that David's car (the Red Ford Explorer) was parked at his home that day. Police later confirmed that the Red Ford Explorer was no longer outside the Potter County Courts Building at this time lending itself to the idea that this was in fact David's car that was there.

January 31st, 1993 was the actual day of David's disappearance and there were no confirmed sightings of David on this day in Amarillo or anywhere else.

When Karen and Lauren (his wife & daughter) returned home they thought David would be there, he wasn't but they found many other odd things. The TV was still recording although the game has supposedly ended. It was stated in some places that someone had to be home to start the recording since their VHS did not have an automatic or scheduled record option. It is assumed that David started the recording when the game started at 5:15 pm, but it could've also been someone else. They found two freshly made turkey sandwiches in the fridge, laundry in the dryer, David's watch and wedding ring on the kitchen counter, and no signs of a struggle and nothing missing from the house, counting out a robbery gone wrong.

Karen wasn't worried yet, she just thought David had gone to a friend's house to watch the game and would be back later, but he never returned.

Later on, a sheriff's deputy would come forward stating they saw someone resembling David outside Potter County Courts Building this night taking pictures of a Red Ford Explorer.

On February 1st David missed two important work appointments so Karen reported him missing and was beginning to get worried. Later a taxi driver in Dallas would come forward stating he drove someone resembling David from a hotel to the Dallas airport. He stated this man was nervous and had a ton of $100 bills that he went through to pay the driver.

1600 miles away, a 23hour drive by car, in Yakima, WA someone in their car sees a man in the center line of route 24 after dark. This driver turned around to warn others and help this man to not get killed. However, by the time he made it back the man was already dead in the road...this was around 10:24 pm on February 1st.

Thought to be the victim of a hit and run this man was classified as a John Doe. He was wearing work military clothes and work boots. Glasses were found in his pocket and he had no ID or wallet and no drugs or alcohol were found in his system.

Back in Amarillo, TX on February 2nd David's red Ford Explorer was found in front of the Potter Courts building with his house and car keys under the floor mat. Also found inside was his checkbook, credit cards, and ID...this was normal for David.

In 2002 the Amarillo police stated that David left voluntarily since they had no evidence pointing otherwise.

In 2003 the Seattle Post Intelligencer did a series called "Without a Trace" going over issues with police handling adult missing person cases and issues with the national missing person database. Patrick Dutter, a Washington State Police Detective, saw the article and decided to use Google to search into local John and Jane Doe cases to see if he could find anything.

Just a week later he had an extensive list of Doe's that could match different cases. Dutter found David's case and matched it to the Yakima Doe but was initially unsure due to the John Doe not wearing the glasses that David needed. However, after looking through police evidence files he found that they were in the pocket of the Doe.

In October of 2004 Washington sent Amarillo some tissue and they compared it to David's mother's DNA...it was a match, David Glenn Lewis had been found.

There are tons more oddities in this case and so many theories, go listen to the episode to hear more information on the case!
