Kelly Boyce-Hurlbert lived in Traverse City, Michigan which is known far and wide for their cherries. Every year there is a large cherry festival that the entire town participates in and kelly was no different, she had been working at a restaurant during that time. On July 5, 2013, just shortly before 2 a.m. Kelly is on her way home from this festival when she is hit and killed by an unknown vehicle.
This case was suggested to me by a redditor (here is their post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/d8hhjy/unsolved_hit_and_run_in_michigan/ ) weeks ago but I have had little luck on finding much in this case. Due to still wanting to cover the case I am doing so on here.
At about 2 a.m. on July 5, 2013, Kelly left her husband at a pub only 5 blocks away from their home. His band had been playing there so he had driven in order to transport all of the equipment. So, Kelly jumped on her bike and began the very short ride home down Washington St. In her small and loving city, she thought she was nothing but safe on her peaceful ride home, but that quickly changed.
An unknown car comes quickly towards her and slams into her and her bike. Kelly's bike was thrown from street and sadly Kelly was trapped beneath the car, her body being dragged for two blocks. People in their homes on Washington St. heard the commotion and begin to spill outside. Upon seeing Kelly lying barley alive in the road one individual rushes to call 911.
As the ambulance arrives they rush to try and stabilize her, already believing it may be too late. At the same time, police call her husband, Paul who had already made it to their house a few blocks away. Paul learns the news over the phone and rushes to the scene as fast as he can move.
Eventually, Kelly is taken to the hospital and Paul goes along with her. Sadly, it is only a few hours later that Kelly passes away from her traumatic injuries.
This is where the facts of the case end, but scenarios that could be plausible do not. The redditor who introduced this case to me brought up the fact that in the last two years two other hit and runs had happened in the same area. It could just be bad luck overall and a sad trend that was setting in but then you look at the victims and they look fairly similar to Kelly. Was someone trying to target Kelly for three years and finally got to her? Or was it someone targeting women with Kelly's main identifying factors? Or yet was this all just a sad coincidence?
